The Ford Authority Take

The concept of wireless and hands-free EV charging is one that several entities have explored as of late, largely because it makes a ton of sense. Those efforts include a company called WiTricity equipping a Ford Mustang Mach-E with wireless charging technology, the very first public EV charging roadway opening up near Michigan Central Station recently, and a variety of Ford patent filings for ideas such as a roadway charging coil alignment and monitoring system, a hands-free charging system, an EV charging pad with wireless charging, and another type of hands-free charging system, as well as a swappable battery system. Now, this new patent filing keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for an induction charging system that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.

In this patent filing, Ford notes that inductive charging could prove to be a suitable alternative to plug-in chargers at some point in the future, as it’s already being used for everything from smartphones to power tools and even toothbrushes. The concept behind inductive charging is rather simple, too – it’s a type of wireless power transfer that uses electromagnetic induction to provide electricity to various devices.

In this case, Ford proposes using such a system to charge all-electric vehicles, which would rely on an inductive charger setup consisting of a base, platform, a coil, three posts, three carriages, and three arms. This allows the system to accommodate different types of vehicles and imperfect positioning, making for a more convenient charging solution – and one that stands a pretty good chance of coming to fruition.
