Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an electric power take-off system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 12th, 2023, published on May 28th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11996725.
The Ford Authority Take
Over the past few months, Ford has been busy filing patents exploring various ways to provide power for different types of devices from its future models, a list that includes ideas for a system that could help provide more power for outlets installed in hybrid vehicles, a new Pro Power Onboard interface, an integrated roof rail power outlet system, an integrated truck bed for power outlets, and a remote power system, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for an electric power take-off system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
A power take-off device – as Ford notes in the patent – is used to transfer mechanical power from an internal combustion engine to another piece of equipment, such as a conveyor or lift. However, all-electric vehicles can also be used in this manner, instead relying on their high-voltage batteries to power different kinds of equipment – and that’s precisely the system that’s outlined here.
This proposed system would be able to automatically determine how much power a piece of equipment may need, as well as in the case of multiple components, which should be prioritized. From there, the system would supply power from its high-voltage battery, though it would also feature a failsafe that could warn users or even turn the system off if the vehicle’s state of charge gets too low. It’s an interesting idea for certain, and one day, may make EVs even more useful.
