Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an LED light blade setup that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 2nd, 2023, published on May 7th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11976800.
The Ford Authority Take
Automotive lighting has evolved tremendously over the past several years, going from the long-running yet rather dull halogen setup to modern day LEDs in many cases. Regardless, lighting figures to continue to change moving forward, and Ford intends to remain in front of the proverbial pack by filing patents for ideas such as an automatic drive model lighting system, a roof-mounted light assembly, and even lights adorning the hood and fender areas. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for an LED light blade setup that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
While many traditional lighting assemblies on vehicles consist of a light source and a covering or housing of some kind, in this case, Ford’s proposed light blade setup is a bit more complex. It would consist of multiple features including a light housing, a lens, and a light source housed within a cavity, while the light blade would protrude from the lens on the outside of the cavity, to boot.
From there, light would be provided by the light source located in the cavity, which would be directed by the housing and lens. It would certainly lend a cool, futuristic look to pretty much any vehicle, and in this case, looks to pertain specifically to the rear portion of a crossover of some sort. Regardless, it could wind up being used on a multitude of future Ford vehicles, if it indeed comes to fruition.

Comments
Ford has been in the proverbial last position as far as cool lighting is concerned. Just recently have they gotten a little better. Long way to go.
The concept certainly has cool aesthetic but as a customer, I don’t need or want another complicated dirt trap to have to clean and maintain. Sealed units are more practical, not to mention less damage prone.
If there is a lighting guy/gal out there reading this, I beseech thee to upgrade the interior cargo area lighting of all vehicles. I’m amazed that so many cargo areas have one weak lamp to light up a large area. An LED strip would do wonders for loading/unloading/moving cargo around in the dark.
