The Ford Authority Take

Recently, Ford filed a patent for a sun tracking and protection system that would receive GPS data and use it to determine a vehicle’s relative position to the sun, as well as trip information to act accordingly. If the system determines that the vehicle will travel through a significant period of sun glare, it could then in turn warn the driver, automatically tint the windows to combat that glare, or even manipulate the HVAC system to compensate for raised temperatures caused by the sun coming through the vehicle’s glass. Now, this newly filed patent presents us with a somewhat similar idea – this time, for a light glare mitigation system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

Everyone that has ever driven a vehicle has dealt with glare at least once in their lifetime, and in some cases, this can occur on a daily basis. Glare is not only annoying, but also, can be quite dangerous in that it obstructs our vision, making it more difficult to see other people, vehicles, or even objects. Thus, this system would take steps to mitigate the impacts of glare in a number of ways.

The system outlined in this patent would be able to detect when glare is an issue based on whether or not the driver is squinting their eyes, or if the sun visor has been pulled down. From there, it would determine which regions the glare is coming from and present “indicia” – signs, indications, or distinguishing marks – on the vehicle’s display to assist with navigation. It’s an interesting idea for certain, and one that may very well wind up making it to production given the many dangers sun glare can present.

Y’know… a lot of that is from oncoming vehicles and they solved this problem in Europe for the most part… the problem is FMVSS is in a pissing contest with UNECE so adaptive headlights have been delayed so bureaucrats can dither over minutia and justify a job.

Ford had a sun glare mitigation solution for decades in the strip of tint on the top edge of the windshield. Sadly in the last five years or so it and so many other items too have been corner cut ( decontented ) out of their vehicles.
