Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a V2V towing communication link that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on August 11th, 2021, published on May 7th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11975614.
The Ford Authority Take
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication has been used – or explored – in various ways over the years by more than one automaker, a list that includes Ford. The Blue Oval has filed patents for all kinds of ideas related to this tech, such as an electrified charging trailer control system, a neighboring vehicle security system, and a vehicle-to-vehicle security system, to name just a few. Now, this newly-filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing a new sort of idea – this time, for a V2V towing communication link that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
As it aims to make the act of towing easier in the future, this new Ford patent explores one way to incorporate V2V technology in that regard. By linking a vehicle that’s doing the towing with the thing that it’s towing, Ford notes that this would enable the two to share important information, whether that be regarding the direction a towed vehicle is facing, the angle at which it’s positioned, the maximum speed one can travel at while towing that specific load, and even its impact on range.
Throw in route information, and there are many reasons why such an idea may be very useful for those towing other vehicles or smart vessels in the future. It could prevent mishaps or even accidents, damage to vehicles, and other potential hazards, all of which are obviously good things, even for those that may be more experienced at towing in general – making this a potentially useful idea, indeed.
