The Ford Authority Take

Pro Power Onboard has thus far proven to be a big hit for The Blue Oval, and since the built-in portable generator debuted in the 2021 Ford F-150, many have found it to be useful for everything from powering appliances to charging EVs. This feature gained even more power when it launched in the Ford F-150 Lightning, giving owners the ability to easily charger other all-electric vehicles anywhere they please. Since then, Ford has filed a patent for a faster charging cable, while AAA has added E-Transit vans to its fleet – all of which could make this new patent filing for a peer-to-peer DC fast charging system quite viable for use in future Ford vehicles.

DC fast chargers are starting to become more common across the U.S. and the rest of the globe, and for good reason – they can significantly cut down on charging times for EVs. Problem is, if an EV runs out of juice before it can reach one of those stationary chargers, owners are forced to look at alternatives, such as being towed to a charging station, or – in this case – potentially charged up wherever they sit.

The concept of portable EV charging is one that many are exploring at the moment – including Ford – but in this case, the automaker proposes a much faster method of doing precisely that. In fact, the patent outlines an idea for a charging system with an output of more than 50 kW, which would come directly from another vehicle. This could certainly prove to be helpful for roadside assistance providers like AAA, as well as owners that find themselves stranded, for certain.
