In Europe, the Ford Puma has long been a regular at the top of the sales charts, though it certainly has plenty of competition in that market. Regardless, The Blue Oval continues to update the Puma, adding the new Powershift model last year ahead of a refresh this year, which will soon be followed by the addition of the all-electric Puma Gen-E. Now, the Puma has yet another electrified rival to do battle with in Europe, too – the Jeep Avenger 4xe.
The Jeep Avenger 4xe adds a plug-in hybrid option to the small crossover’s lineup in Europe, as well as some more off-road-friendly upgrades, to boot. It joins the existing hybrid and all-electric Avenger in that market, though unlike the other two, it comes equipped with all-wheel drive rather than just front-wheel drive, and that system is able to disconnect one axle when it isn’t needed, as well as split torque between both ends based on road conditions.
The Avenger 4xe is powered by a turbocharged 1.2L I-3 gas engine that produces 134 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, but it’s also mated to two electric motors that add 28 horsepower each and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to Jeep, that’s good enough for a 0-60 time of 9.5 seconds and a 120 mph top speed. Compared to regular models, the Jeep Avenger 4xe sits 0.4 inches higher, giving it 8.26 inches of ground clearance, as well as 22-degree approach, 21-degree breakover, and 35-degree departure angles.
On the outside, one can easily differentiate the 4xe from regular Avengers thanks to its Luminous Green accents, standard roof rails, a revised front and rear bumper, black-painted wheels, available all-terrain tires, and optional hood sticker. The Jeep Avenger 4xe won’t be sold in the U.S. – as is the case with its counterparts – but order banks are set to open up for European customers in Q4 of this year.
