With 11 races in the books in the 2024 Cup series season, The Blue Oval has yet to make it to Victory Lane, the longest the manufacturer has gone without a victory in 14 years. NASCAR Ford driver Josh Berry, the man behind the wheel of the No. 4 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, recently opened up about his thoughts on the matter.
Berry says that he’s not going to blame bad luck, but he does think it’s playing a part in Ford’s dry spell this year. He feels that the Mustang racers have speed, especially at the short tracks, but they just can’t seem to get it done, especially in the case of his No. 4 NASCAR Ford team.
“For us, it’s a combination of everything,” Berry says. “We’ve some races where we didn’t run quite like we wanted and we had several races where we’ve been really fast and we’ve had a miserable day on Pit Road… The reality of it is, it’s just hard to win at this level.”
Berry says he’s not overly nervous about Ford’s winless streak. He’s a rookie in the Cup Series, having taken over the No. 4 Mustang for Kevin Harvick this year, and he’s simply trying to find his stride with his new team, crew and manufacturer. The Blue Oval, for its part, is trying its hardest to get back to Victory Lane.
“Everyone at Ford’s working really hard too,” Berry says. “On the aero side of things, on the engine side of things, there’s lots of things that go into it that we know are areas we can improve on. You keep doing that. [Ford] just won the championship last year in all three divisions, and everyone’s waving the white flag and panicking. I think we’ll be fine – it’s just going to take time.”
Currently, only one NASCAR Ford team is inside the top 10 in points – the No. 12 Mustang of Ryan Blaney, who’s in seventh. If Ford wants to pull off back-to-back championships, there’s a lot of work to be done.
