As most Blue Oval fans are painfully aware, Ford has faced its fair share of quality issues in recent years, which led to it being the most recalled manufacturer of 2023, though CEO Jim Farley notes that things have already improved for the 2024 model year. On top of that, the Lincoln brand ranked below the premium segment average in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), though the Lincoln Aviator, specifically, has produced mixed results. That particular model won a 2023 Total Quality Award (TQI) from Strategic Vision after topping the luxury SUV segment, but also ranked as one of the top 10 least reliable vehicles on sale by Consumer Reports back in 2022. Now, a new study from iSeeCars counts the Lincoln Aviator among the vehicles that are expected to have the most recalls issued over its lifetime.
In that regard, the Lincoln Aviator is projected to have the eighth most recalls over its lifespan of any vehicle – 26.2 in total, which is 8.1 times greater than the median average of 3.2. That ranks it behind only the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Porsche Panamera, Lucid Air, Tesla Model S, and Tesla Model X.
iSeeCars came up with this list after analyzing the latest recall data for the 2015-2024 model years from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It identified the 25 models with the most projected lifetime recalls and determined that this data is much higher than a typical vehicle, and that those models also have quite a lot more lifetime recalls than the industry average – not to mention substantially more than the 25 least recalled cars, which are projected to have less than one recall over the course of a 30-year lifespan.
“If you’re hoping to avoid recall hassles, you can significantly improve your odds by choosing the right model,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “A vehicle like the MINI Convertible or Lexus RX 450h has, literally, a fractional chance of being recalled even once, versus more than 60 projected recalls for the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model Y, and Tesla Model 3. Even the industry median of 3.2 lifetime recalls sounds much better than the approximately 15-plus projected recalls for all of the cars on the most recalled list.”
