No. 21 NASCAR Ford Mustang Confident About All-Star Race

Harrison Burton, driver of the No. 21 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse, is gearing up for the 2024 All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro on May 19th. He’ll leverage the extensive experience that Wood Brothers Racing (RBR) has at this iconic track, and his team is confident about the No. 21 Mustang’s chances at making the main event.

Because Burton did not win a race in the No. 21 NASCAR Ford last year, he is not guaranteed a spot in the All-Star Race. He could earn a slot by performing well in the All-Star Open race, or by being voted in by fans.

“Obviously it’s really cool to be racing again at such a historic venue as North Wilkesboro,” said Jeremy Bullins, crew chief for the No. 21 NASCAR Ford team. “This year, with the repave, is likely to look like a much different race. And everyone has a lot of questions about how the Option tire is going to drive and how long will it last.”

He added, “Hopefully we can learn what we need to in practice to race our way through the Open and get in the big show for the All-Star race.”

WBR is the oldest team still in operation on the Cup Series circuit. The iconic No. 21 race car ran 46 races at North Wilkesboro from 1957 until the track was stricken from the schedule in 1996. During these events, the No. 21 machine earned two pole positions in 1958 and 1959 and two wins in 1963 and 1964.

North Wilkesboro sat unused and deteriorating until it was revived for the 2023 All-Star Race, and the No. 21 NASCAR Ford team is chomping at the bit to make history at the track again. This year, things will look a little different, as NASCAR is trying out a few new sets of tires on the fresh asphalt. This includes Prime tires, identifiable with yellow lettering on the sidewalls, as well as Option tires with red lettering. The Option tires are wet-weather tires with slick tread, and are expected to offer more grip when they’re fresh, but they’ll likely wear out faster in the long run. Finally, teams also have access to true wet-weather tires with white lettering.

  1. Burton is in his third year with the Wood Brothers and this year he is slower than ever. Time to get a new driver for such a great team.
