Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a midgate that may be offered on the Ford Maverick, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on October 31st, 2022, published on May 2nd, 2024, and assigned serial number 0140297.
The Ford Authority Take
The concept of a midgate – or a section in which users can open up and pass items through a pickup’s bed and cab – is nothing new, and it recently made a comeback with the Chevy Silverado EV. Ford has also been exploring this same concept for a while now via various patent filings ranging from ideas for a pickup truck bed to cab pass through system, special access openings, a two-panel cab back for unibody trucks, and a pivotable sill assembly, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent features a design for a midgate that may be offered on the Ford Maverick, too.
Though the Maverick isn’t specifically mentioned in this patent filing, the concept does apply to unibody pickups – and currently, the Maverick is the only unibody pickup in Ford’s lineup. Otherwise, the concept is quite simple, as this midgate would be located in the rear portion of the cab, opening up to provide access between the two – or space to fit larger items.
It’s safe to say that a midgate would be a welcome addition to the Ford Maverick for many owners, given the fact that its bed is somewhat small. Its presence would open up a whole new world of cargo-carrying capabilities, enabling the transportation of long items – in some cases, without having to drop the tailgate and strap them down or use an extender – and that’s sure to appeal to folks that own one, we imagine.

I carried a 16 foot long 6 inch gutter in my maverick two weeks ago. It went from on top of the dash to the end of a ladder sticking 4 feet past the tail gate. No problem.
I just carried 2x10x16 on my truck. Although, it was my old Silverado, my Maverick is just for fun!
