The concept of third-party companies working with automakers to produce special variants of vehicles is nothing new – simply look to Multimatic and its work on the Ford GT and Ford Mustang GTD as some recent proof. We’ve also known for some time that more Ford Bronco variants are in the works, ranging from work-focused models to more luxurious ones, adding to an already expansive lineup. Now, it seems as if another familiar name – Penske Vehicle Services – plans to put together its own unique Ford Bronco and Ford Mustang variants as well, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.
Penske is reportedly planning to create a “state-of-the-art vehicle painting facility” in Auburn Hills, Michigan at a 115,000-square-foot building located in a supplier park. This news stems from a recent proposal submitted to the city, which must still be approved. However, if that is the case, Penske will invest a whopping $6 million in the site, which will reportedly add 130 jobs as well.
The new factory will serve one specific purpose, really – to perform custom paint jobs on special edition vehicles from Ford, as well as perhaps other manufacturers as well. This would include special versions of the Ford Mustang and Ford Bronco, as Penske recently secured a contract with the automaker enabling it to do precisely that.
Across two shifts, Penske expects to churn out around 32 vehicles per day at this new facility, ramping that up to around 60 over time. The outfit could use the facility for its wet painting program, which involves disassembling vehicles to add custom paint elements like stripes or a roof that’s finished in a different hue, as well as potentially a base for modifying vehicles in other ways or creating custom show cars, retrofitting, or assembling prototypes.
We’ll have more on this custom variants soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Bronco news, Ford Mustang news, and continuous Ford news coverage.
