The Ford Mustang is once again the only traditional American V8-powered, rear-wheel drive coupe left on the market – with a manual transmission option, to boot – following the discontinuation of the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro and Dodge Charger/Challenger – though the Charger will soon return with an inline-six powerplant. Regardless, The Blue Oval is keen to take advantage of this competitive leg up, not only with retail consumers – but also, law enforcement agencies as well, where the Charger had begun to make inroads over the past few years. We saw this recently as the North Carolina State Highway Patrol purchased a couple dozen 2024 Ford Mustang GT coupes, but it seems as if that agency isn’t alone, according to the Detroit Free Press.
In addition to the NCHP, the same agencies in South Carolina and Georgia have announced that they will also be purchasing a number of 2024 Ford Mustang GT coupes to help combat speeding, and it’s having a positive impact on sales for that particular model, too. “Police have found a sweet spot,” said Erich Merkle, U.S. sales analyst at Ford. “We expect to see more sales as other companies have ceded this area of the industry.”
Currently, the Georgia State Patrol has hundreds of Chargers in its fleet, along with more than a dozen Challengers and Camaros, but with those models being discontinued – or, taking a hiatus at the very least – agencies are now looking to The Blue Oval for as a way to provide troopers with an effective way to catch super speeders out on the interstate.
“Most of these are used on interstates,” said Andrew Simmons, a government sales manager for Ford. “They can catch anybody they want. These go from the plant in Flat Rock to chasing the bad guys. Right now, we’re at a fever pitch in terms of interest. Better than 50 percent of the customers I’m seeing are crossing over from other brands and coming into Ford to buy a Mustang, where they bought other vehicles for the past four to five years. It’s night and day how much quicker they go from a full stop to the vehicle they’re pursuing.”
