Luxury sedans from the late 1970s have somewhat of a cult fanbase these days, but it’s difficult to find 40-year-old vehicles that aren’t high-mileage or just plain beat to hell. It can happen, though, like a 1978 Mercury Marquis that recently sold after being owned by one family for most of its life. Now, an example of the 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis is ready for its next home, and it’s barely left the parking lot in its decades-long lifespan – it shows just 153 miles on the odometer.
Up for grabs on Bring a Trailer, this 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis was snapped up by a Lincoln-Mercury dealer principle after the facility closed its doors. It spent most of its life in a private collection before being acquired by the selling dealer, and it hasn’t even been driven past its break-in period.
This luxury sedan, which is finished in Dove Gray, is powered by the 460ci V8 engine mated to a three-speed automatic transmission, powering the rear two wheels. A matching Dove Gray full vinyl roof is situated over color-coordinated Dove Gray cloth upholstery, and the luxury sedan features sleek, hidden headlights up front.
It is fitted with the Bumper Protection Group, Visibility Light Group, and the Appearance Protection Group, and features intermittent wipers, a rear window defroster, and power antenna. It rolls on 15-inch forged aluminum wheels. Stopping power is aided by power-assisted front discs, and power steering was standard issue.
Inside, the 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis features Comfort Lounge front seats and a rear bench. It boasts standard power windows and a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat. Amenities include cruise control, air conditioning, and an AM/FM stereo complete with a tape deck.
The original window sticker is included in the sale, indicating that this vehicle was valued at $9,851 new, or approximately $47,452 when adjusted for inflation. The high bid is currently $21,000, and the auction will close on July 1st, 2024.
