The third-generation Mercury Capri is a rare breed today, and as a Mazda platform-based captive import vehicle built in Australia, it’s not a common sight on the road. Occasionally, they’ll show up for sale online or at auctions, though. As Ford Authority has previously covered couple low-mileage models have been spotted on the auction block before, including a 1992 Capri with just 24,000 miles racked up, and another 1993 model with 26,000 miles shown on the odometer. Another example is currently searching for its new home: a 1991 Mercery Capri XR2 with just 16,000 miles traveled.
Currently available on Bring A Trailer, this 1991 Capri XR2 has been kept in storage since the seller acquired it in 2009. It’s finished in Cardinal Red and is offered with a black soft top and body-color hardtop. The soft top has only been used twice in its life, according to the seller.
While its paint looks fairly well preserved, there are a few dings noted in its report, including minor rear end damage from a minor accident in June 2022, a touched-up scratch on the front end, and a rear bumper that was refinished following an incident in 2016. Additionally, the rear hatch struts have failed, although replacement parts are included in the sale.
Inside, the reclining front seats are finished in gray. The vehicle can fit four passengers and features air conditioning, cruise control, a four-speaker sound system, a fold-down rear seatback for storage. The seller states that the air conditioning system was upgraded to R134 in 2016.
As for power, this 1991 Mercury Capri is fitted with a turbocharged 1.6L I4 engine, factory rated at 132 horsepower and 135 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission routes power to the front two wheels. It was recently serviced and had the coolant and engine oil changed in February 2024, and the seller notes that its valve cover gasket has a leak.
The auction for this 1991 Mercury Capri will close on June 11th, 2024.
