Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck Wins 2024 Pikes Peak

It was just a few weeks ago when The Blue Oval pulled the covers off its latest EV demonstrator – the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck – which was slated to make its competitive debut at the iconic Pikes Peak International Hill Climb just this past weekend. There, the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck had a monumental task ahead of it – try and replicate the tremendous success its predecessor, the SuperVan, enjoyed last year with Romain Dumas behind the wheel, where that duo set a new class record in 2023. Turns out, the SuperTruck didn’t just match that feat, it also one-upped the all-electric van, too.

In fact, the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck charged up Pikes Peak in a blazing time of 8:53.553, which was the quickest of all 61 competitors this year. Prior to that, the SuperTruck also set a new qualifying record for the open class with a time of 3:32.831 – over seven seconds faster than the previous record of 3:39.939 set by the SuperVan 4.2 last year. Amazing enough, Dumas managed to accomplish this in spite of experiencing a technical issue that caused him to come to a complete stop, which added roughly 26 seconds to his initial qualifying time.

“I’m honored to achieve this victory with Ford Performance at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb,” Dumas said. “Everything about this event is a challenge because it is unlike any other form of racing, you only have one shot. We faced a challenge early on but that only gave me more determination to make up the lost time in the rest of the run.”

The Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck managed to pull off this monumental feat not only thanks to its extreme bodywork designed to generate copious amounts of downforce – 6,000 pounds at 150 miles-per-hour – but also, via a pretty trick powertrain as well. That consists of three STARD UHP 6-Phase Motors and Ultra-High Performance Li-Polymer NMC cells, which generate a combined 1,600 horsepower, though as Ford Authority previously reported, the SuperTruck also gets by with a rather small 50 kWh battery pack, to boot.
