Ford Mustang GT3 Racers Ready For 2024 Le Mans

The all-new Ford Mustang GT3 is one of many new S650 pony car-based racers that has debuted over the past months, though it shares quite a bit of DNA with the road-going GTD. However, the Ford Mustang GT3 is embarking on a pretty important mission this coming weekend – tackling the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans, where The Blue Oval has quite a rich history, but last claimed victory in the Ford GT back in 2016.

This won’t be the first time the Ford Mustang has competed at Le Mans – one pony car raced there back in 1967, followed by two in 1997 – but this will be the first time that the model is participating in that race with specific intent in the World Endurance Championship circuit. This effort is being spearheaded by Multimatic Motorsports and M-Sport, along with the Germany-based team Proton Competition.

Following a successful series of practices, Proton Competition will field three Ford Mustang GT3 racers in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans – the number 77 car driven by Ryan Hardwick, Ben Baker, and Zacharie Robichon, as well as number 88 racer piloted by Giorgio Roda, Dennis Olsen, and Mikkel O. Pedersen. Last month, that outfit also announced that the number 44 car will be shared by Christopher Mies, John Hartshorne, and Ben Tuck, too.

“While Mustang GT3 is the pinnacle of our sports car racing around the world, it is only one part of a far broader strategy around Mustang racing that includes our recent Mustang Challenge Series as well as GT4 and much more besides,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We race to win and also to build our Ford Performance community, and our hope is that fans at Le Mans get as much excitement from the off-track experiences as they get from attending the race itself. This is an exciting time to be a fan of Mustang.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
