The all-new Ford Transit Custom launched in Europe last October, and has since gone on to pick up precisely where its predecessor left off – as one of that van-hungry region’s best-selling vehicles. That success is especially apparent in the UK, where the Ford Transit Custom was that country’s best-selling van in 2023, and it has continued to hang out near the top of the sales charts through the first part of 2024 as well.
The Ford Transit Custom kicked off this year by ranking as the UK’s best-selling van in Q1, and followed that up with a second-place finish in the month of April. Now, new data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT) shows that the Transit Custom retook the top spot from the regular Transit as the UK’s best-selling van – and top light commercial vehicle overall – after recording 3,189 sales last month, handily beating out its lineup mate, which finished with 2,505 sales. It also extends the Transit Custom’s year-to-date lead by a large margin, as the van racked up 17,185 sales through the first five months of the year.
Overall, light commercial vehicle sales in the UK rose by 1.9 percent to 25,853 units in May, which marks 17 consecutive months of increases. All-electric van sales increased by 3.5 percent to reach a 4.2 percent market share, but as SMMT points out, this growth isn’t good enough to meet mandated Vehicle Emission Trading Scheme targets in the UK.
“The UK van market’s 17-month run of growth is playing a crucial part in renewing the fleet with the latest, cleanest vehicles,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. “However, convincing businesses that now is the time to switch to zero emission operations remains a challenge. With an expanding choice for every use case now available, the next government must take steps to recharge the zero emission van market, an essential part of the net zero economy every party wants.”
