The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a rather large number of airbag-related patents over the past few years, a trend that has included proposals for adding that type of safety feature in order to protect pets riding in vehicles via specially-placed airbags and even restraints. However, pets aren’t the only precious cargo that many people tend to haul around in their vehicles – rather, young children are also worth adding protection for, and that’s precisely what this newly-filed patent is for, specifically, child seat airbags that may be used in future Ford vehicles.
Child seats have long been used as a way to protect small children from injury while riding around in vehicles, though they rely solely on restraints built into those removable seats, coupled with seat belts installed in a vehicle. Here, Ford proposes adding an airbag in the bottom, center portion of the rear seat, which could then inflate in the event of an accident, covering the child in the seat and presumably reducing their chance of being injured.
This special airbag would inflate from the bottom of the center seat and cover the entire child seat, providing a good bit of protection in case an accident does occur. Otherwise, it functions much like any other type of existing airbag, which seemingly gives it a pretty solid chance of one day becoming a feature that’s included in Ford vehicles.
