Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a haptic feedback system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on June 8th, 2023, published on June 11th, 2024, and assigned serial number 12008166.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has explored the concept of incorporating haptic feedback features into its future vehicles on numerous occasions as of late, including via patent filings for a seatbelt buckle vibration capability and a haptic feedback system specifically geared toward EVs. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for haptic feedback system that may be used in future Ford vehicles as well.
As Ford points out here, haptic feedback is already used in everything from automobiles to consumer electronics, simulating the sense of touch to provide feedback to users. Additionally, different functions can be activated based on how much force one applies to those controls, or how many times they tap them. On top of all that, users can also customize what haptic controls do in many cases, making them more appealing.
In this case, Ford proposes using a haptic feedback system in its future vehicles as a way to obtain information about road conditions and then adjust various parameters related to the haptic device based on that input. For example, the system could decrease haptic feedback intensity on smoother roads, and increase it on rougher ones, making for a more user-friendly experience. Given the rise of haptic feedback features in modern vehicles, such a system may be rather welcome as a way to reduce the frustration that can occur when activating the wrong feature, too.
