The Ford Authority Take

Early last month, Ford filed a patent for a system capable of communicating with police during traffic stops, which would relay vehicle identification information to police, as well as give law enforcement the ability to send that vehicle a request to communicate. From there, the user’s vehicle would alert them to the request to pull over, eliminating the fear that they may not actually be a real law enforcement officer, as well as making their intentions or infractions clear. Now, this new patent somewhat piggybacks on that idea with a new one for a vehicle enabled officer assistance system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

The goal behind this newly published patent is the same as the previous one – to reduce the chances that something bad may happen during a traffic stop. In this case, Ford is aiming to eliminate the possibility that a driver who is being pulled over by police may leave their vehicle in drive after stopping by accident, leave their turn signal on, open their door prematurely, or even continue to move the vehicle unintentionally, which could be dangerous to them and the officer that pulled them over.

This system would aim to prevent that by using various sensors in the police vehicle to determine whether the driver has made an error or has some sort of malicious intent, such as wanting to flee the scene or trying to injure the officer. It would rely on predefined escalation characteristics to do so, and notify the officer if it seems likely that something bad is about to happen. This could prove to be a good thing not only for law enforcement, but also, people who have no malicious intent yet make a mistake during this tense type of situation.
