Riley Herbst had a shot to win the Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway on June 15th, 2024, restarting side-by-side with the Chevy of Sam Mayer for a green-white-checker finish. However, The No. 98 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse just didn’t have the speed to keep up with Mayer’s No. 1 Chevy Camaro SS, try as he might, especially when the two race cars made contact heading to the checkers.
When the green flag dropped after the final caution period of the night, Mayer and Herbst ran each other hard as they rounded the track. In Turn 1, though, Mayer got the advantage, leaving Herbst to fall backward as the two drivers doored each other driving to the finish line. Herbst was a bit upset about the finish, and said he felt Mayer hadn’t raced him clean.
“I like racing Sam, but Stage 1 or 2 he just absolutely brooms me,” Herbst said. “We were racing clean for fourth, and he takes us back to 10th and then doors me down the back straightaway before the green-white-checker.”
He added, “It’s just frustrating the way he wants to do that, but all in all, it was fun. I’m happy to be back on ovals. The speed is back in the 98.”
Herbst had to settle for second, a frustrating result as the NASCAR Ford teams still search for their first victory in the Xfinity Series this year. Cole Custer’s No. 00 Mustang finished sixth, followed by the No. 38 Mustang of Matt Dibenedetto, the only other Blue Oval racer to finish inside the top 10.
