Retired NASCAR Ford Driver Carl Edwards Grateful For HOF Induction

Carl Edwards, longtime driver of the No. 99 NASCAR Ford in the Cup Series, was finally voted into the Hall of Fame for the Class of 2025 after being on the ballot for four years. Edwards apparently wasn’t expecting to be given the honor this year and was both shocked and humbled when he found out his name would soon be listed among stock car racing’s greatest.

According to a report from NASCAR.com, Edwards was on a flight when the announcement was made. After he landed, his wife contacted him and told him to check on the announcement about his election to the HOF.

“I thought about it. I thought, man, I can’t build my day around that because it’s not going to happen,” Edwards said when asked if he expected to be elected. “I called Randy Fuller [former Roush Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing senior media relations manager], and I was just blown away. I knew Randy wouldn’t mess with me like that. I was shocked, and I still am at how much it means to me. I wasn’t expecting to feel this way. It’s very humbling.”

After collecting 72 wins across all three of NASCAR’s national divisions. He is most well-known for his stint in the No. 99 NASCAR Ford machine, which he drove for most of his Cup Series career. He retired upon conclusion of the 2016 season and has since disappeared from stock car racing.

“The longer I’ve been away, I appreciate the sport more and more,” Edwards said. “This honor is over the top. I did not expect this in any way. I was shocked. It’s been a huge deal to me, much bigger than I ever would have expected… The sport gave me so much. The people in the sport gave me so much that … I don’t know. I think of a Hall of Fame person as someone who gave more, and so I guess that’s why it shocks me. It’s hard to explain.”
