Hoonigan’s ongoing This vs That series has produced some rather entertaining content over the years, with more than a few Blue Oval models participating in that drag racing showdown. In some cases, we’ve even been treated to a little Ford on Ford crime, with both vehicles lining up against each other coming from that same manufacturer, too. Now, the latest installment in this series pits a pair of Blue Oval models against each other for yet another chance at internet glory – this time, a 1977 Ford Capri and a 1980 Ford Cortina.
Though they’re both FoMoCo models from basically the same era, this 1977 Ford Capri and 1980 Cortina are far from stock, as one might have guessed by now. For starters, the Cortina has been given the Pro Street treatment with massive tires out back, which are driven by a 5.3-liter LS V8 with a pair of turbos that makes around 614 horsepower. It’s a serious looking machine that won’t fool anyone with its sheet metal interior and parachute out back, but that’s also the case with its foe on this particular day.
That car is a vintage Ford Capri Mk2 that also wears giant tires in the rear and has a twin turbocharged 540 cubic-inch V8 underhood, which generates around 2,200 horsepower. That’s good enough to propel it down the quarter-mile in 7.42 seconds at 197 mph, according to the owner which is incredibly quick by anyone’s standards. It weighs quite a bit more than the Cortina, however – 3,200 pounds versus just under 2,100 – but obviously has a massive power advantage, too.
In the first race, none of that matters when the Cortina hangs its front tires in the air and rockets to an early lead, though it ultimately loses after posting a 9.57-second quarter-mile compared to the Capri’s 8.61-second run. In round two, the Ford Capri gets a car length head start, but the Cortina still passes it at the top end – this time, running an 8.26 versus the Cortina’s 9.27-second run. Regardless, it’s a fun series to watch, even if it wasn’t quite as even as we’d like.
