The Ford Mustang and Mercury Capri ASC McLaren models are some of the more unique examples of those cars to surface over the years, as well as some of the rarest, to boot. ASC McLaren teamed up with FoMoCo on multiple occasions, churning out some interesting vehicles such as these, which were produced in very small quantities, so we don’t see a ton of them surface for sale on a regular basis. However, this 1986 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren convertible is up for grabs right now.
Those interested in purchasing this 1986 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren can bid on it right now over at Bring a Trailer, and it’s a nice example that’s remained in the possession of a single family since it was sold new. It’s also just one of 245 examples from the 1986 model year, but it has actually been driven a decent amount, with 81k miles showing on the odometer. Regardless, it remains in solid condition, with just a couple of minor flaws marring its black exterior.
Inside the cabin, one will notice some wear on the tan leather Recaro bucket seats, and the “O’Boost EGO” and “Low Fuel” warning lights are illuminated all the time for some reason. Otherwise, there are plenty of amenities here including air conditioning, a Kenwood cassette stereo, a leather shift knob, a Whistler radar detector, and power windows and door locks.
Power for this Mercury Capri ASC McLaren convertible comes from the naturally-aspirated Ford 5.0L V8, which in this guise was factory-rated to produce 200 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque, flowing to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. If nothing else, it certainly isn’t every day that we see one of these rare machines pop up for auction, which should make it compelling for some folks – which was previously the case with a 1988 Mustang ASC McLaren and a 1986 Capri example that recently crossed the block.
We’ll have more cool auction finds like this to share soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authorityfor more Mercury Capri news and around-the-clock Ford news coverage.

Thinking back, I remember when we loaned a new MCLAREN to Mark Solomon of Budget Rent A Car as a demo supplied to them for all the business we were receiving. The factory supplied them with about 10 Lincoln demos and our dealership gave them another five. In return we sold them thousands of Ford and Lincoln-Mercury vehicles from the early seventies until 2001.
