1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Turbo With 60K Miles Up For Auction

The Mercury Capri hung around in the automotive market for more than two decades, but it also changed quite bit over that timeframe. Originally added to the lineup as a sporty, compact model, the Mercury Capri later morphed into an alternative to the Fox Body Mustang before taking a few years off and then returning as a compact, two-door roadster designed to compete with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Recently, we’ve begun to see more and more later Mercury Capri models surface for sale at auction, and this gem is now joining them.

1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Turbo With 60K Miles - Exterior 002 - Rear Three Quarters

This 1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Turbo has just 60k miles on the clock and is currently up for grabs at Bring a Trailer. It’s finished in Cardinal Red and comes with both a body color-painted hard top and a black soft top, though the latter piece has some tears in it. With a sport-tuned suspension and four-wheel disc brakes underneath, the Capri rolls on a set of 14-inch cast alloy wheels wrapped with 185/65 Kelly Edge A/S tires.

Aside from a tear in the left front seat cover outer bolster, the interior of this Mercury Capri is in good shape as well, and loaded with amenities such as air conditioning, cruise control, a Clarion CD stereo, and power windows, mirrors, and locks. Power for the sporty drop top comes from the turbocharged and intercooled 1.6L inline-four that was factory rated to produce 132 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque, mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Turbo With 60K Miles - Engine Bay 001

This is just the latest nice Mercury Capri we’ve seen hit the collector car auction circuit as of late, however, a list that has previously included a 1991 XR2 with 16k miles, a 1992 Turbo with 24k miles, a 26k-mile 1993, and a 44k-mile 1993 model – marking a bit of a comeback for the cool, modern classic.

  1. Would be fun to swap this drive train into a 1994 or ’95 Ford Aspire SE. Give it the powertrain it should’ve had back then.

  2. Do you like banging your head against a wall ? Buy this thing and you will be doing the same thing. I was working at the dealership when they came out. Very little support back then and parts hard to come by then!!! Imagine now. It was a quirky little thing with questionable design and quality. Hey buyer beware!

  3. The design is still modern. Ford can remodel the Mustang with this design, bring it more up to date and create a rebirth of the Capri under the Lincoln line for the European customers

    1. You ever live with one ? I don’t think so. The engine electronics were a mix of Mazda ,MECS and Ford EEC. In an Australian vehicle. Crap of the highest order.

  5. Was the motor supplied by Mazda ? I had a 1992 Ford Probe GT Turbo, 5-speed which I understood it was a Mazda motor.
