Cam Waters Puts Supercars Ford In Victory Lane At Townsville 2024

Battling through rain and tough competition, Cam Waters, driver of the No. 6 Ford Mustang GT in the Australian Supercars Championship, found victory in Race 13 at the 2024 NTI Townsville 500 on July 5th, 2024.

True to his surname, Waters came to life when a late shower drenched the track in the closing laps. He finally got the advantage on Chaz Mostert, a fellow racer under The Blue Oval’s banner, muscling past Mostert’s No. 25 Mustang after a brutal battle up front. In fact, the two Mustang racers hardly let the other go throughout the race and parted company only after a pit stop cycle broke them apart.

After a late-race pit stop, Waters came back on track running third. He was able to get past the second-place car and lunged after Mostert, who maintained the lead. They formed a two-car breakaway, ditching the rest of the field by almost four seconds. A lengthy battle ensued, returning Waters to the point, and he never looked back, crossing the line 1.854 seconds ahead of Mostert.

“That was an awesome race, I had so many cool battles through the race,” Waters said after the race. “Chazzie [Mostert] was probably quicker at the start of the stints and I was probably quicker at the end of the stints, and we had some epic battle out there, it was a lot of fun. My car was absolutely amazing on its tires so a massive thank you to all the boys and girls at Tickford [Racing] for wheeling me out a fast car.”

Waters commended Mostert for racing him cleanly throughout the event, despite the fact that the two Ford Mustang GT race cars appeared evenly matched.

“I think we’re getting wiser with our old age, I think five years ago we would have been in the wall,” Waters said. “I just knew I had to have something at the end of my stints to battle with, as soon as I went out for that last stint I was looking after the tire so I had something at the end.”
