Ford already has a strong presence in a number of U.S. states, including Kentucky, where the automaker operates the Kentucky Truck plant and the Louisville Assembly plant, and is currently working on the future joint-venture BlueOval SK Battery Park, too. However, it seems as if The Blue Oval is considering expanding that presence even further, this time, to include a new parts facility that would represent a major investment on its part.
According to the Courier Journal, this future parts facility would be located near Shelbyville, Kentucky – a bit of news that comes from two sources – a recent meeting of the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority board, as well as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear himself. “Ford Motor Company is considering Shelby County for a small, specialized high-tech component manufacturing operation. The components would primarily be used for EVs,” according to the meeting. Beshear later confirmed that the state has already approved incentives for the project as well.
This future site has already been approved for more than one incentive, in fact – including tax credits from Kentucky Business Investment incentives, as well as $170 million from the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act. The latter incentives would refund the state’s sales and use tax for things like equipment used to develop the site, as well as construction materials. “We thank the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development for its offer of support as we explore the potential for a specialized high-tech facility in Shelby County,” Ford spokesperson Jess Enoch said in a statement.
Ford has invested heavily in the state of Kentucky in recent years, pumping another $700 million in the Kentucky Truck plant back in September 2022. Meanwhile, its latest facility in that state – BlueOval SK Battery Park – is still on track to begin producing EV batteries in 2025, but will only use one of two buildings in the near future following a global slowdown in demand for all-electric vehicles.
