Ford F-150 Owners Used Pickups As Generators After Beryl

Ever since The Blue Oval’s Pro Power Onboard generator debuted in the 2021 Ford F-150, that feature has become increasingly popular for a number of good reasons. Aside from proving portable power for things like job sites and even wedding receptions, Pro Power Onboard has also proven to come in handy during power outages, many of which have been caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes. That was also the case when Hurricane Beryl slammed into the state of Texas recently, too.

In fact, Pro Power Onboard was such a popular feature in Houston in the aftermath of Beryl that Ford F-150 owners generated at least one kilowatt of electricity, on average, immediately before and after the storm caused outages across that particular area, according to Ford CEO Jim Farley. That’s enough juice to power things like televisions, refrigerators, and other appliances for a number of hours.

Of course, this is just the latest of several examples where Pro Power Onboard in the Ford F-150 has proven to be incredibly useful in times of crisis. Ford previously sent a number of F-150 PowerBoost pickups to Kentucky after floods ravaged certain parts of the state, as well as Louisiana following Hurricane Ida a few years ago, and after tornadoes impacted the Midwest back in 2021. The Ford F-150 Hybrid has proven so popular – for this reason and others – that it now accounts for around a quarter of total F-150 production, too.

  1. You could buy 5 whole house generators for what these trucks cost! How long does FORD suggest running these Trucks 24/7 until the power comes back on?

    1. Maybe those house generators are cheaper, but the F-150 moves itself, so how much would it cost to buy 5 trucks to carry those generators?

  2. The lightning version (not mentioned here) has the advantage of zero engine wear while supplying backup power. If people on average are only drawing 1000 watts, (1 kw), that means 3 whole days of backup power should only drain the battery 75 kwh (allowing for losses).

  3. Ford does have better ideas! No other truck maker sells both hybrids and electrics. The hybrid Maverick should have the same power output feature.
