The Ford Kuga PHEV has long been one of the most popular plug-in hybrids in Europe, routinely ranking at or near the top of that particular list. However, in May, the Ford Kuga PHEV fell to fourth place on the European sales charts with 2,676 units sold – a 43 percent year-over-year decrease. With the first six months of 2024 now in the proverbial rear-view, the Ford Kuga still managed to rank near the top of the PHEV sales charts in Europe over that timeframe, regardless.
According to new data from JATO Dynamics, the Ford Kuga ranked second in PHEV sales in Europe over the course of H1 2024, logging 20,848 sales – a 21 percent decrease versus H1 2023. That ranks the Kuga PHEV behind the Volvo XC60, which edged it out by recording 29,903 sales – a significant 42 percent increase. This comes after the Ford Kuga was among the best-selling new vehicles in Europe last year, while the PHEV topped its segment – but this recent dip could be attributed to the arrival of the refreshed Kuga, regardless.
As for the overall European car market, registrations increased by 4.4 percent in H1 2024, from 6,559,213 units last year to 6,847,842 units this time around. EV and PHEV sales didn’t fare any better, each growing by just two percent over the first half of the year, though 26 percent of EV sales growth came specifically from imported Chinese models – which may change given recent moves to increase tariffs on those models.
“Europe’s growth is becoming more moderate – still far from levels seen pre-pandemic due to a more complex operating environment, including emissions regulations, increasing prices of vehicles, and barriers facing the adoption of electric cars,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics. “Since the semi-conductor shortage, electric vehicles have been the main driver of growth. It’s therefore vital that over the next six months, the industry does all it can to dispel uncertainty surrounding the EV market, including how EU tariffs on imported electric cars from China will impact the affordability of these vehicles.”
