While Ford has earned its fair share of accolades over the years, it has also topped a particular list that isn’t exactly one that any automaker wants to rank first in – the number of recalls it issues on an annual basis. In that regard, Ford has issued more recalls than any of its competitors over the course of 2021, 2022, and 2023. As Ford Authority reported earlier this month, The Blue Oval actually dropped to third through the first part of 2024, but has since moved up the list slightly.
With the first half of 2024 in the rear-view mirror, Ford ranks second in terms of the most recalls issued by any automotive manufacturer in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is at least an improvement over the past three years. Currently, Ford has issued 30 recalls, which is just behind Chrysler at 31, as well as Forest River (a builder of recreational vehicles), which tied it for first place with 31 recalls issued through the first six months of the year.
Regardless, Ford still ranks very close to the top of this list with six months left in 2024, which isn’t the best possible news. It, Chrysler, and Forest River have also issued at least double the number of recalls as fourth-place Kia, as well as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Jaguar, and General Motors, to boot.
In recent months, Ford has instituted a number of new practices as it aims to reduce its recalls and warranty costs, all while improving initial quality. Those include performing quality checks to identify and correct issues with refreshed or redesigned vehicles before deliveries begin. This process reportedly helped prevent a dozen recalls pertaining to the refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 alone, but will also inevitably delay the launch of new models including the refreshed 2025 Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Maverick, and Ford Explorer.
We’ll have more on Ford’s recall problems and quality issues soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford recall news, and ongoing Ford news coverage.

Mr. Farley, with all your talk of quality improvements it seems the message is not getting through to the vehicle and then the consumer. Perception can become reality and those companies with high number of recalls undoubtedly cause consumers to think twice about buying from that OEM. Does the EV promise you so often tout hope to stop the slide in quality? I would think you might want to fix quality on the ICE VINS before you move to EV’s.
The EV’s will have quality problems too, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
With the 10 speed in mind, 10R80 transmission. If ford recalled all the unsafe vehicles that should be recalled they would be number one in recalls.
