Ford Rival Ram Files Patent For Three-Row Pickup Truck

In recent years, three-row SUVs and crossovers have become more and more popular, prompting automakers to develop more and more examples of that type of vehicle. However, modern-day pickup trucks continue to be sold in the same old standard configuration, which typically consists of a pair of bucket seats (or a split bench) up front, with a three-person bench in the rear of models with bigger cabs. If a recently-filed patent from Ram comes to fruition, we may soon see a three-row pickup, however.

First discovered by GM Authority, this new Ram patent filing depicts a pair of jump seats mounted in the cab behind the second-row of seating, much the same way select extended cab pickups used to utilize that type of small seat. The third-row jump seats would be detachable, interestingly enough, meaning that users could remove them if they needed additional cargo space, or install them when they need more room for extra passengers. Additionally, the seats would fold up when not in use, too.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Ram explore the idea of a three-row pickup, however, as the Ram 1500 Revolution EV concept that debuted in 2023 featured the same sort of setup, after which this patent was filed on December 14th, 2023 and subsequently published on July 4th, 2024. The design – seen in these patent drawings – is quite similar to the system in the concept, too, with an extended cab portion behind the second-row making room for the additional seating.

While the Ford Super Duty based Excursion offered up something similar – albeit in SUV form, and not with a pickup bed – FoMoCo also published a patent for a vehicle seating system last September, too. However, that patent depicts a pickup with removable seats in the bed itself, which could be removed when not in use.

  3. I think it is a great idea. Since the majority of pickup owners want the look but don’t actually use the bed (I’m not saying its right), flexibility for more people is likely a winning idea.

  4. Silly. Build a tiny house on the back and you can live in it. Or make it a 3 ft bed on a 25 foot truck. Sad generation.
