Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a tire pressure notification system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on December 30th, 2022, published on July 4th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0217275.
The Ford Authority Take
Though tire pressure monitoring systems have been around for a number of years now, Ford has filed a handful of patents aimed at helping to improve them as of late – as well as potential ways to avoid driving around on dreaded flats or worn out tires in general. Those filings include ideas for a tire tread depth detection system, a tire pressure loss detection and alert system, an adaptive tire pressure system, and a serviceable non-pneumatic tire. Now, this newly published patent adds to this list by presenting us with an idea for a tire pressure notification system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept behind this newly published patent revolves around the idea that some may not notice when air escapes the valve stems from their tires while they’re being filled up, for reasons ranging from hearing impairments to noisy surroundings. Thus, this proposed fix would be able to determine if that is the case by using various sensors, at which point it would provide a warning to the user in a variety of ways.
Those methods could include haptic feedback – such as vibration – via the wheel itself, or even using the steering system to physically “wag” the wheel and tire back and forth. It would make this determination based on present ranges of air values, making for a pretty interesting – and potentially useful – idea that may wind up coming to fruition at some point in the future.
