Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an in-floor storage system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 17th, 2023, published on July 18th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0239270.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has explored a variety of ways to increase the amount of storage space in its future models via several patent filings in recent years, including ideas for a cargo area tool carrier system, as well as a modular storage system, to name just a couple. Now, this newly published patent aims to keep that trend going, this time, by presenting us with an idea for an in-floor storage system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept here is relatively simple, unlike a lot of patent filings, and revolves around a cargo storage system that would be located in the rear cargo area of a vehicle such as an SUV. We’ve seen things like this with a handful of all-electric vehicles in recent years, but in this case, the proposed “hidden” storage area would configurable, while users could move it around as desired to accommodate different types of cargo.
That includes anything from a tool box to a cooler, and in some cases, a cover that would conceal this cargo when it’s placed in the large cavity. Given the fact that similar setups already exist in a variety of vehicles, it stands to reason that we may one day see something like this in a bevy of Blue Oval products, perhaps taking the place of something like a spare tire that would normally reside in the same exact place.
