Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a moonroof assembly with an airbag that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on March 6th, 2023, published on July 23rd, 2024, and assigned serial number 12043196.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed a large number of patents in recent months, all centered around one particular topic – airbags, or more specifically, places where it may wind up installing those protective features in future models. This list includes – to name just a few – ideas for airbags that would be located in places like a cabin crossbar with a movable pillar, over seatbacks, and in the roof – in more ways than one. Thus, it isn’t terribly surprising to see that this newly published patent keeps that trend going, this time, by proposing a way that airbags may be mounted to moonroofs in future Ford vehicles.

In this case, the airbag assembly would wrap around the frame of the moonroof, along with an inflator, but would be essentially hidden out of sight most of the time. In the event of a crash, the airbag would inflate, however, covering the entire roof and even portions of the front and rear glass in certain vehicles.

The potential benefits of such a system are pretty obvious – this type of airbag could help prevent the moonroof from shattering and causing further injury, and it may also prove useful in the event of a rollover crash. Ultimately, it’s also yet another way Ford may incorporate more airbags in its future models, however, ideas that continue to multiple on a regular basis.
