The Ford Authority Take

The Blue Oval has filed a handful of patents in recent months outlining different center console and interior storage designs that may one day wind up in future Ford vehicles, a list that includes ideas for an electronic device holder, a removable armrest, and a movable center console with hidden storage space, to name just a few. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going by presenting us with an idea for a removable module that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

This newly proposed center console design is one of the more detailed and multi-faceted ones we’ve seen yet, as users would not only be able to remove the module and use it to transport things, but also, it could be modified to move and transform into all kinds of things. For example, the removable module could make way for other modules containing things like screens, storage bins, cupholders, or just about anything else one could imagine.

Ford gives us a wide range of potential uses in these patent drawings, which could even include adding a space for cold drink or food storage, combining quite a few different modern, existing center console designs into one. It’s an interesting idea for certain, and given the innovation we’ve seen in this space over the past few years, it wouldn’t be one bit surprising to see it come to fruition at some point in the future.

    1. Ford is building small hybrids. Most are for Europe, such as the Kuga. The U.S. customers prefer Asian brands, because spending less money is more important than national brand loyalty.

  3. Could a critical component (a unique and key specific item ) be integrated with the removable console that would make it impossible to start the vehicle with the console removed? (anti theft feature). Also make a seat assembly available that could replace the console in the event a 6th passenger was required.
