Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a system capable of ranking routes based on complexity that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on April 19th, 2022, published on July 9th, 2024, and assigned serial number 12031831.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has published a host of patents revolving around the idea of making future navigation systems even smarter than they are today. That list includes ideas for an off-road track recommendation system, an obstacle detection system, a navigation prediction vehicle assistant, and an interactive navigation coaching system, to name just a few. Now, this newly published patent presents us with another navigation-related idea – this time, for a system capable of ranking routes based on complexity that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
This new patent is aimed more at people that aren’t necessarily experienced drivers, such as younger folks that have just gotten their license and may not necessarily be comfortable on certain types of roads. Depending on the speed limit and the number of curves on any particular roadway, this could certainly present a problem for those still learning the finer aspects of driving, and as such, this system aims to inform drivers of just how complex their proposed route may be.
When the driver keys their desired destination in the navigation system, it would not only give them such information ahead of time, but it would also be capable of commending an easier route – over time, those routes could get more complex, too, based on the driver’s learning curve. This may not only help make driving more comfortable for those younger folks, but also, may even help prevent some accidents as well.
