How The Supercars Ford Mustang Drivers Dominated At Sydney

Chaz Mostert led a Blue Oval-dominated effort at Sydney SuperNight on July 20th and 21st, 2024, guiding the No. 25 Ford Mustang GT across the line first in both Race 15 and Race 16 in the Australian Supercars Championship. While he won both nights, though, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Ford racer, and his dominance can be boiled down to pit strategy.

A recent analysis on Supercars.com breaks down the critical moves executed by the Ford Mustang teams at Sydney. Mostert decimated a 15-point difference behind fellow Ford driver Matt Payne in the No. 19 Mustang heading into the final laps. Payne was on a single-stop strategy and running on older tires, although Mostert’s No. 25 Mustang wasn’t fazed by the same issue.

Mostert steadily hunted Payne as the laps ticked down, forcing the latter to wear out his already spent tires. Then, in Turn 2, Mostert made the pass and led right to the checkers. On Sunday, Mostert did the same, outperforming his fellow Ford racer Cam Waters in the No. 6 Mustang and the No. 87 Chevy Camaro of Will Brown. He cut away a 10-second deficit to win Race 16 that day, proving that his No. 25 Mustang was faster than the rest by leaps and bounds.

In short, incredible pit strategy gave Mostert the edge in Sydney. He elected to pit on Lap 33 during both races, giving him an 18-lap run to the finish without having to worry about managing his tires. Pitting after the leaders also gave him a much-needed advantage.

Currently, Mostert is second in the overall points standings, slotting in behind only Brown.

The next Supercars race is the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, scheduled for August 16th through 18th.
