When Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) announced that it would cease operations upon conclusion of the 2024 season, that left four Cup Series drivers without a home for 2025, including rookie Josh Berry. However, Berry has nailed down his future for next season and beyond. In fact, he’ll drive the No. 21 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse for the oldest team in Cup Series competition next year.
Wood Brothers Racing dropped the news on July 3rd, 2024. Berry, who only began racing full-time in the Cup Series this year, will replace Harrison Burton, who currently drives the No. 21 Mustang for Wood Bros. While Berry has no wins in NASCAR’s highest echelon as of this writing, he boasts five Xfinity Series wins and the 2020 Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series championship. So far in Cup, Berry has two top fives, four top 10s and has led 70 laps. He’s also up for the 2024 Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.
“When you think of the history and legacy of NASCAR, it’s hard to not think of the Wood Brothers and the incredible impact they’ve made on the sport. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a small part of carrying on that legacy,” said Berry in a statement. “To be able to add my name to the list of drivers who have piloted the iconic No. 21 is something I don’t take lightly.”
Jon Wood, president of Wood Bros., stated, “Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working with a multitude of successful drivers, and now having the opportunity to add Josh Berry to that list is a significant milestone for our team. Josh brings a wealth of talent and determination, evident thorough his success in every level of competition, from grassroots NASCAR to present day. He fits the values of our team, and we believe that with Josh behind the wheel, we will achieve great things together on the track.”
Meanwhile, it’s not clear where Burton will end up next year. He first took over the No. 21 NASCAR Ford in 2022, and in 92 starts, he’s earned one top five and five top 10s with an average finish of 26.7.
