Though it has faced its fair share of trials and tribulations over the past couple of years, the Ford EV battery plant known as BlueOval Battery Park Michigan continues to take shape, and is still on track to begin producing lithium iron-phosphate batteries for all-electric vehicles starting in 2026. Due to softened demand for EVs, the future Ford EV battery plant won’t be quite as large or have as much output as originally expected, but regardless, it will soon stand to benefit from another infusion of state funding.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that it is awarding a state Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) grant to the Calhoun County Road Department (CCRD) for road improvements around the under-construction Ford EV battery plant, which are designed to help support the forthcoming 1,700 jobs and $2.5 billion of private investment in nearby Emmett and Marshall townships.
These funds will be used to make improvements to Verona Road between Raymond Road and 15 Mile Road, as well as sections of 11 Mile and 15 Mile roads. Those improvements include an asphalt overlay, road widening, signal modernization, and the addition of turn lanes, all made possible by a total infrastructure investment of $21.2 million. “This project reflects our commitment to providing residents with a modern and efficient transportation infrastructure that meets the needs of today and the future,” said Brian Kernstock, senior civil engineer for the CCRD. “We are grateful for the support and funding from our grant partners, which make these vital upgrades possible.”
Earlier this month, Ford revealed that the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan site is around 20 percent complete, and when construction is finished, it will span around 1.8 million square feet, while other surrounding buildings will add another two million square feet to that total. However, following FoMoCo’s decision to scale back that footprint, its planned workforce, and output at the future plant, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Michigan Strategic Fund for BlueOval Battery Park Michigan has also reduced the value of its incentive offer for the site from roughly $1.035 billion to somewhere between $384 million and $409 million.
