The all-new, sixth-generation Ford Bronco debuted for the 2021 model year, marking that beloved model’s return a full quarter-century after it was discontinued following the 1996 model year. Since then, the latest Ford Bronco has enjoyed tremendous success for the most part, debuting to substantial demand that perpetuated for several model years before things finally began to taper off recently amid building inventory. Now, however, the 2021 Ford Bronco is the subject of a new investigation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the 2021 Ford Bronco after its Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received six complaints from owners pertaining to fuel pump failures. Estimated to potentially impact 45,597 2021 Ford Bronco models, this issue revolves around the SUV’s low-pressure fuel pump, which may fail, resulting in a complete loss of motive power with no ability to reengage. The NHTSA didn’t specify if the fuel pump problem pertains to one or both of the Bronco’s available powerplants however.
“Consumers have reported that the failure occurred while driving, without warning, and resulted in a complete loss of motive power with no ability to reengage the engine. The reports indicated that the low-pressure fuel pump was replaced following the incident,” the NHTSA states in its Preliminary Evaluation (PE).
The NHTSA also noted that FoMoCo has acknowledged that this same low-pressure fuel pump is used in several other Ford and Lincoln vehicles, meaning that this investigation could very well be expanded in the future, depending on its findings. For now, the purpose of this investigation is to gauge the scope and severity of this issue, and to assess what sort of safety problems it may lead to, however.
