Cole Custer broke his Xfinity Series dry spell at Pocono Raceway on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, putting the No. 00 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse across the line in first.
Custer beat close championship contender, Justin Allgaier, driver of the No. 7 Chevy Camaro SS, to the stripe by 0.670 seconds, holding him off after a late-race restart with just nine laps left on the board. The win marks Custer’s 14th in the division and his second at Pocono, following his 2019 victory at the “Tricky Triangle,” and his first since winning the championship race at Phoenix in November 2023.
“You just try to manage it the best you can but it’s kind of the luck of the draw who gets the best push,” Custer said after the race. “That was some Doug Yates horsepower right there. We definitely had it on the straightaways and man, I just can’t say enough about these guys. They’ve worked so hard this whole year and just haven’t had that final result. To finally get it, is so awesome.”
Custer’s Pocono victory puts his NASCAR Ford team solidly atop the standings, 51 points ahead of second-place Allgaier. Further down the standings, Sammy Smith, driver of the No. 8 Camaro, barely holds the final Playoffs berth over Ryan Sieg, driver of the No. 39 NASCAR Ford, with seven races left in the regular season.
