Polestar CEO Throws Shade At Ford Capri Over Design

Following months of anticipation and multiple teasers from the automaker, the all-new Ford Capri EV debuted yesterday bearing a design that makes it unique from its platform-mate, the Ford Explorer EV. However, many were quick to point out the familiar design cues the new Ford Capri EV bears on the outside, including its Porsche-like headlights, as well as the fact that overall, its shape is quite similar to the Polestar 2. Turns out, it wasn’t just enthusiasts that noticed those similarities, either.

Polestar CEO Ford Capri EV Instagram Story

In fact, Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath himself noticed the striking similarities between the new Ford Capri EV and the Polestar 2, then posted the above to his Instagram stories. Along with a side-view photo of the Capri EV, Ingenlath added “I knew about the U.S. production of PS3 [Polestar 3]. This came as a surprise.” The story was first noticed by InsideEVs, and is obviously notable for a number of reasons besides the fact that it confirms what most of us have been thinking over the past 24 hours or so.

In terms of sizing, the Ford Capri EV is very close to the Polestar 2, with a wheelbase that’s two inches longer, though it is four inches taller. Regardless, there’s no denying the similarities in exterior styling between the two, when we compare them side by side. Interestingly, Ford Authority also spotted The Blue Oval benchmarking a Polestar 2 back in August of 2022, too.

Of course, there’s a lot of history between these companies, as Ford purchased Volvo back in 1999 and held onto it through 2010. China-based Geely Automobile now owns Volvo, which created Polestar as its own EV spinoff prior to that transaction. Earlier this year, Geely – which now owns both brands – announced that Volvo would no longer provide funding for Polestar, though the two continue to collaborate on things like manufacturing and research and development.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. How do we know the polestar isn’t a chinese knockoff of the Capri

    1. The Polestar 2 has been in production for over four years now

  2. The first thing is that this atrocity is NOT a Capri. It´s a boring SUV and a cheap copy of a Polestar 2 with Capri emblems. Like the Mach-e, which also is NOT a Mustang, now Farley produces another abomination with no character and that doesn´t represent what those automobiles always were. Instead of taking iconic car names to sell nonsense, he should produce real sports coupes or if he wants more SUV´s (I don´t see what for), he should then use new names.

    1. The Mustang Mach E is a Mustang. Stop whining about it already.

Listen to the moaning. It’s not a Capri, yes it is it’s stamped on the body. What it isn’t is an impractical 2 door coupe that wouldn’t start and if you were lucky enough to have a 3.0s like I did, need bags of cement in the boot to try and keep the backend on the road.
No motor company is going to make a car they can’t sell and 2 door coupe’s are just that car.

  3. Certainly can’t blame them for whining. Just awfully similar

  4. All these crossovers / SUVs look alike. Why bother to call out another manufacturer when there is a close resemblance to any styling that may differentiate one from another. Just another EV that I’m not interested in Ford.

    1. Unless you live in Europe, your interest is irrelevant, since it’s not coming to the U.S.

  6. Oh Thomas, don’t get your kickers in a knot…your Polestar 2 is a copy of both the original Capri and the Lancia Delta…all SUV’s are copies of a copy of a copy, where are the real designers? They are all CAD’s or stemmed from the sword of Zorro!
