James Courtney, veteran racer in the Australian Supercars Championship, recently revealed that he planned on retiring at the end of the 2025 season. Now, he’s walked back on that announcement, explaining that he’s leaving the door open for future campaigns in the Aussie touring car series if given the opportunity.
According to a report from Supercars.com, Courtney said that while his current contract to drive the No. 7 Ford Mustang GT for Blanchard Racing is set to expire at the end of 2025, he may not be ready to hang up his helmet quite yet. He said he’d “have a think” about it if Blanchard offered him a new deal, even after saying he planned to pursue a career as a realtor.
“That was a bit of a mistake to announce the retirement at that point,” Courtney said, referencing his earlier revelation to a local news source. “I was just talking about the real estate thing, and somehow I announced my retirement at the same time. You know, if Tim [Blanchard] wants to give me another deal at the end of this year, I’ll have a think about it.”
Even so, Courtney acknowledged that he isn’t exactly getting any younger. He’s pushing 45 years old, and has 15 race wins and one championship under his belt in the Supercars division. In short, he’s already done what he came to the series to do, and he’s ready to take on the next chapter of his life, whenever that may be.
“I’m coming towards the end, I’ll be 45 next year,” Courtney said. “Starting the real estate side of things with McGrath, which was fantastic. So, starting to plan for the afterlife, and I announced it on national TV! So, yeah, I could have done something bigger and better and a bit of a farewell tour and all this sort of stuff.”
He added, “But yes, it turns out I accidentally announced my retirement.”
