Tom Petty was one of the most accomplished musicians of the modern era, selling more than 80 million records in his career and churning out number one hits multiple times over the years. Sadly, Petty passed away back in 2017 at the age of 66, but now, a pretty cool car that he once owned – this 1965 Ford Mustang convertible – is set to be auctioned off very soon.
This 1965 Ford Mustang is going up for grabs tomorrow, in fact, at Bonham’s Quail Auction in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. It’s finished in Rangoon Red and is being offered for sale directly from Tom Petty’s wife, too. Petty acquired the pony car back in 2002 and drove it sparingly over his years of ownership, and it was restored before he purchased it, meaning that it’s still in nice condition to this day.
The red exterior pairs nicely with a white and red interior, and this 1965 Ford Mustang is also a D-Code car, meaning that it’s equipped with the 289 cubic-inch V8 fitted with a four-barrel carburetor that was factory-rated to produce 210 horsepower. That powerplant is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, and overall, it’s a nice example of an early pony car – one with some desirable options that would make for a nice cruiser, or a collectible for any big-time Petty fan.
This is just the latest celebrity-owned Blue Oval model we’ve seen hit the auction block as of late, however. That list also includes a pair of vehicles owned by the late, great musician Jimmy Buffet – a heavily modified 2004 Ford E-350, as well as a 1963 Ford Falcon once owned by the laid-back crooner who had a big affinity for Ford vehicles in general.
We’ll have more cool auction finds like this to share soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Mustang news and continuous Ford news coverage.
