1989 Ford Probe GT Turbo With Just Two Owners Up For Auction

Given the fact that it was intended to replace the Ford Mustang, it isn’t terribly surprising that the Ford Probe didn’t exactly get off to the best start when it originally debuted. Massive backlash from pony car fans ensured that wasn’t the case, and the Ford Probe wound up a decent success story, sticking around from the 1989-1997 model years and selling in solid quantities for a sporty coupe. Today, we see quite a few nice examples of this model pop up for sale on a regular basis, and that now includes this 1989 Ford Probe GT Turbo.

This particular Ford Probe – which is up for auction at Hagerty – has quite a few miles on the odometer – 151,538, in fact. However, it has lived with just two owners over its entire lifespan, with the seller picking it up back in 1990 with 27,600 miles and proceeding to use it quite a bit in the ensuing years. As such, it remains in solid condition and is being sold with a lot of the car’s original documentation, to boot.

There is some wear and tear present, as one would imagine, including rock chips, some wear inside the cabin, and a non-functional passenger side window switch and boost gauge. Otherwise, it’s a pretty cool period sports car with black paint and a Sandalwood interior, coupled with the turbocharged 2.2L F2T I-4 engine that was originally rated to send 145 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission.

Reportedly kept in a climate-controlled garage since 1990 and treated to regular maintenance, this well-used 1989 Ford Probe GT Turbo is now looking for a new home for the first time in decades. Truthfully, it isn’t often that we see these particular models pop up for sale either, as the last one surfaced a few years ago in the form of another nicely-kept 1989 Probe GT.

You had a hard time getting parts for this Mazda/Ford bastard child when it was new. Imagine trying to find a shall we say an electronic engine control actuator or an HVAC part ? Good luck! On a positive note they were quick and the transmission was durable. I only had to repair one !

My girlfriend now wife bought a 89 Probe LX on my recommendation’ when it became apparent a Honda Prelude was out of reach, price wise. Great car, no issues whatsoever. Quick enough and very comfortable on the road. No surprise as that generation Mazda 626 was also an excellent but overlooked car. I wouldn’t kick it out of the garage if we had it back.
