2025 Ford Maverick Lariat Ditches Front-Wheel Drive

The refreshed 2025 Ford Maverick made its official debut just over a week ago, ushering in a host of changes as part of the compact pickup’s first formal mid-cycle update. That refresh is full of some rather notable updates, including the fact that customers can now pair the hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive for the very first time. As Ford Authority previously reported, the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 EcoBoost is no longer available with front-wheel drive, however, and that’s also true of one specific trim level.

That trim level is the 2025 Ford Maverick Lariat, which can no longer be had with front-wheel drive, regardless of powertrain. For the 2024 model year, the Lariat came standard with the EcoBoost engine and AWD, but customers could get the hybrid and FWD as an option. That’s no longer the case with the 2025 Ford Maverick Lariat, as the hybrid AWD combination is standard, while the EcoBoost with AWD is an option, though both are the same price. Front-wheel drive is still standard on the XL and XLT trims, but only when paired with the hybrid powertrain.

This trend is nothing new in the world of The Blue Oval, as we’re seeing more and more of the automaker’s models move to AWD or 4WD -only. That list includes the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, which is only available with AWD, as well as the latest generation of the Ford Super Duty, which is 4WD-only, save for the work-focused XL trim. In recent years, the vast majority of Ford’s customers have opted for AWD or 4WD, which is what’s driving these changes.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Ford Maverick lineup, as a whole, is still significantly more expensive than the 2024 model, however, as Ford Authority recently reported, though it still offers good value when compared to other models in the automaker’s lineup that pair the 2.0L I-4 EcoBoost with AWD, even if it has lost 12 horsepower year-over-year.

It is worth noting that the 2025 Ford Maverick does get more standard equipment than its predecessor, including – most notably – a digital instrument gauge cluster and a larger, 13.2-inch screen running SYNC 4. The Tremor isn’t a completely fair comparison either, given the fact that it has become its own trim level based on the Lariat, whereas before, it was offered as the optional Tremor Off-Road Package, which could be added to the XLT or Lariat.

    No matter how much techy they pack into the ’25, sales will go down. The new mask on the headlamps adds a new character not seen since the ’22 introduction: cheap, ugly, nonpractical, foreign looks. Ford is loosing their characteristic lead in the industry and is becoming a follower, no longer a pace setter but a drag to their creation. I’m glad I got my Mav 2 years ago. Would nit buy a ’25 not with tgst…well you know…look

    The revised front end design of the 2025 Maverick is terrible. It looks cheap and disconnected. The 2024 Maverick front end is much better. I think the front end design has ruined the Maverick. Big disappointment.

    Ford … what you did in the past that destroyed the original Mustangs an Thunderbirds by loading them with too expensive options … by bloating them to larger vehicles that they were never meant to be … then sitting back and wondering why they stopped selling … now the very successful Maverick can be heaped on that funeral pyre as well.

    I wanted a ’22 XL Maverick Hybrid with just a trailer hitch, bed Matt, an winter/summer floor Matt’s, would have costed about $21K before taxes, the dealers, they marked them up anywhere from $2K to $4K above retail, sorry no sale … that same truck today is over $29K … yep Ford’s Farley and the other stooges making the decisions have done it again.

    I guess another government bailout for making stupid decisions like EVs and overpriced full size vehicles like the F150 will be rewarded by We The People’s Tax dollars.
