Owners of Ford EV models – specifically, the Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Mustang Mach-E – are now able to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network to charge those vehicles on the go, though they must use a special adapter to do so. Back in February, the automaker began taking orders for this part – which is free for Ford EV owners – but it soon ran into a bit of a snag as supply chain issues hampered its ability to secure enough of them. Now, amid multiple delays, Ford has extended the deadline for customers to get one.
Ford EV owners now have until September 30th, 2024, to reserve their free adapter, which enables their Combined Charging Standard (CCS) models to utilize Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) chargers. This is notable because that deadline was originally set for June 30th, 2024, and was later extended to August 31st, 2024, but since then, shipments of this part have been delayed more than once.
Ford EV owners that are eligible to receive the free adapter will certainly want to reserve one before this deadline, as after it passes, the part will be sold at a retail price of $230. It’s unclear if Ford will be able to fill all of its existing orders – and future ones – by this new deadline, but as Ford Authority reported earlier this week, production of the NACS adapter ramped up significantly just last week, meaning that supply should be increasing over the coming weeks and months.
While these delays aren’t ideal, it is worth noting that owners of other branded EVs are facing even longer delays when it comes to simply being able to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network in any fashion. In fact, as Ford Authority reported earlier this week, only Rivian and Ford EV owners are able to do so at the moment, as General Motors and others have reportedly faced issues in the software coordination process with Tesla thus far.
