Ford Among Followers In 2024 EV Competitive Ranking

In both 2022 and 2023, Ford was recognized by two different organizations as being one of the most innovative companies in the U.S., underscoring its commitment to developing new technology and staying ahead of the proverbial pack in that regard. However, FoMoCo has also recently shifted gears in a big way in regard to its electrification plans, a move made in response to slower than expected growth in consumer demand. Thus, Ford didn’t fare quite as well in newly-released rankings judging automakers in that regard.

The global technology intelligence firm ABI Research just released its latest rankings in an attempt to find the top Electric Vehicle (EV) Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) at the moment, based on nine criteria – including battery technology, platform design and innovation, coverage of different vehicle segments, vehicle range, fast charging capabilities. and electrified share of sales.

Once those results were tabulated, ABI found that BYD had surpassed Tesla over the past quarter, taking over the top spot as both of those automakers were the only two classified as “market leaders.” GAC Aion, General Motors, Hyundai-Kia, Stellantis, Volkswagen, XPENG, and ZEEKR ranked as “mainstream” brands, while BMW, Ford, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, NIO, Nissan, Renault, Toyota, and Volvo lagged behind as “followers.”

Ford is in the midst of retooling its EV plans, trimming 10 percent from its spending in that area and pivoting to lower-cost models. That effort is being led by a skunkworks team working on a new platform set to underpin a variety of future EVs, which is using a streamlined process to complete that task. Ford has also leveraged its partnership with Volkswagen to learn how to scale those types of products, not to mention taking learnings from Tesla and Chinese EV makers regarding its efforts to lower its cost benchmark.
