Ford Amphitheater Off To Noisy Start In Colorado Springs

The Ford Amphitheater – which is programmed and operated by AEG Presents and was developed and built by a company called Venu – touts an 8,000 person capacity and resides in the Polaris Pointe development in Colorado Springs, Colorado, giving visitors views of Pikes Peak in a state of the art entertainment venue. Ford purchased the naming rights to this particular venue, as one might imagine, but thus far, it hasn’t exactly endeared itself to local residents.

In fact, according to KKTV, the Ford Amphitheater has been the recipient of 144 noise complaints after just one week of concerts, even though the city granted it a permit to exceed its existing noise limit. The venue still cannot exceed a noise level of 110 decibels in a five-minute period, and can’t have an average noise level of more than 105 decibels, which is measured by a third-party acoustics company via nearby rooftops.

“That information is fed real-time into our front of house,” said Venu COO and President Robert Mudd. “At our front of house, we have real-time measurement of sound there as well and that ensures that we keep our amplification of sound under the requirements for the city. We did not exceed 110 decibels at a peak, and our average stayed below 100 decibels for the entire weekend. The mitigation science is continually being dialed in. We will do everything in our power to reduce the expression of noise outside of the amphitheater.” Regardless, it seems as if local residents aren’t exactly pleased at the noise levels coming from the venue.

“We live 3,500 feet away from the venue,” said resident Chris Francis.”It sounds like there’s a speaker in our neighborhood where we can hear the music, the drums, everything as loud as we’re in the venue itself. Contrary to popular belief, we’re not Karens up here, we’re not just complaining to complain. We’re hopeful that the venue would be able to function, we’ll be able to live quiet lives in our neighborhood but that’s just not the case.”

There was a very simple solution that would have mitigated all of this, at the design stage, the architect and planners could have built it so the stage and speakers FACED AWAY FROM RESIDENTIAL AREAS AND TOWARDS I 25. There’s nothing in that direction but a huge expanse of trees on Air Academy grounds on the other side of the highway.
